Smithing is used to turn ore into bars, weapons, armour, and arrowtips. Smithing an item takes two seconds. Utilizing Seeing Gold Potions gives a 10-75% chance to produce a Gold Bar when smelting Silver Bars. Purchasing and equipping Smithing Gloves from the Shop causes a +50% bonus to Smithing XP while the gloves have charges remaining. Raising Smithing to level 99 will unlock the Smithing Skillcape for purchase from the Shop. Equipping the Smithing Skillcape halves the Coal Ore requirement when smelting bars.

Into the Abyss Expansion

Smithing is used to turn ore into bars, weapons, armour, and arrowtips. A number of the armour pieces can be upgraded at the cost of GP and Silver or Gold Bars, or TotH.svg Iridium or TotH.svg Palladium Bars in the Throne of the Herald Expansion, resulting in armour with better stats (most importantly Damage Reduction).

Mechanics

All Smithing actions take a base time of 2 seconds. This can be reduced by 15% by purchasing the Art of Control upgrade, up to 5% with Iridan ( Level 60), and by 0.3 seconds while the Pig + Salamander Synergy is in use. All of these interval reductions combined bring the action time down to 1.3 seconds, the minimum possible in the base game.

The Throne of the Herald Expansion introduces further interval reductions: Blacksmiths Gloves provide a 0.1 second reduction when equipped, Mountain Trail reduces the action time by 0.2 seconds, the Salamander + Eagle Synergy provides a 20% reduction (0.1 seconds greater than Pig + Salamander), 3% with the Elite Pillar of Expertise, and 2% once Harold is unlocked. The lowest possible action time in the expansion is therefore 0.8 seconds.

Skill experience gained while Smithing may be increased significantly with the use of Smithing Gloves, providing a 60% experience increase. These gloves may be purchased from the Shop at a cost of 100,000GP for 500 charges. Smithing gloves are later superseded by TotH.svg Blacksmiths Gloves, which in addition to a 75% skill experience bonus provide +3% Smithing mastery experience and reduce the action time by 0.1 seconds.
