Introduction
Introduction
This guide is designed to describe how best to integrate unholy prayers into combat progression with the AoD expansion.
The following guide takes the player through the combat of the AoD Atlas of Discovery Expansion with as little effort as possible. This guide is targeted at people who have either completed or nearly completed the base game. Completion of at least the Air God Dungeon is recommended to follow the largest portion of this guide.

Unholy Prayers
A lot of the combat for AoD Atlas Of Discovery is locked behind both the Cartography and Archaeology skills so progress those if you have locked combat areas/dungeons.
Unholy prayers can give a massive boost to late base-game combat. They can increase kills per hour (kph) by a magnitude of 1.5x-4/5x in dark waters and beyond. This can dramatically shorten grinds such as the fragments from Dark Waters and trivialize difficult bosses.

While they can be acquired earlier than ITM, they are far less effective without the Combat Passive Slot. The main strength of Unholy Prayers is multiple forms of % max HP damage, which is most effective on the strong enemies such as in Dark Waters, Unhallowed Wasteland, Impending Darkness Event, and in the TotH Throne of the Herald expansion.
This Guide is NOT designed with the Ancient Relics Game Mode in mind. Players looking for more information about that Game Mode should visit the Ancient Relics Guide. There is also the Barrier Guide which can be used as an alternative to this guide.

Note: Unholy Prayers are not effective against the boss in Into the Mist as she is immune to all debuffs.
A simplistic order for completing AoD Combat:
# Acquire god gear sets from: Air God Dungeon, Water God Dungeon and Earth God Dungeon

Unholy Prayer Mechanics
How Atlas of Discovery affects Base Game Combat
Unholy prayers do not follow the same mechanics as normal prayers.
* An Unholy Item (M) will either state "Unholy Item used for Unholy Prayers" or "+1 Unholy Mark stacks applied when hitting with an attack and allows Unholy Prayers to be used with one other item that allows for Unholy Prayers." These two effects are exactly the same.
* For each Unholy Item equipped, 1 Unholy Mark is applied to the enemy per hit, up to a maximum of 5.
* 1 Unholy Mark is removed from the enemy when they complete an attack.
* Unholy prayers consume Prayer Points per hit, not once per attack turn.
* Each time prayer points are consumed while using an Unholy Prayer, 1 Unholy Mark is removed from the enemy. This happens independently for each prayer, so with 2 prayers, 2 stacks are removed. Preserving Prayer Points results in fewer marks being consumed by the player's attacks.
* Unholy prayers scale in power based on unholy marks on the enemy.

It is also necessary to specifically talk about Reckoning. The stated effect "+10% damage dealt per effect affected by" is extremely unclear. The way it works is:
Barrier Combat
* For each active status effect on you (meaning, individual icon), you gain 10% damage per unholy mark on the enemy.
* Multiple stacks of a status effect do not affect the power of Reckoning.
* Similarly, a status effect with 0 stacks also counts, as long as the icon is visible.
* So for example with 5 active status effects, and 5 Unholy Marks on the enemy, Reckoning increases your maximum hit by +250%.

Due to the mechanics listed above, there are some cases where only a single prayer provides more damage than 2.
The primary mechanic added to the game in Atlas of Discovery is Barrier, a powerful shield that is entirely immune to player attacks while active. In order to break barriers, the player must utilize Summoning Familiars that deal damage such as the Golbin Thief or Unicorn. Clear speed will be almost entirely determined by how fast you can break the Barrier so make sure to prioritize summon max hit in your builds.
* With only the minimum 2 items equipped and little/no Prayer Point Preservation, using 2 Prayers results in little/no marks being applied meaning prayers have no effect.
* Without multi-hitting weapons, a weapon with a long attack interval will struggle to stack sufficient marks on the enemy due to them being removed on enemy attacks.
* Thus, it is recommended to use weapons with special attacks that hit multiple times with 3+ unholy items for the best results.

Aquiring Unholy Items
Higher hit chance weapons are strongly recommended during the entire combat section, unless the alternative is required for Damage Reduction or the alternative simply does more damage. This is because the familiar's hit-chance is based on the player's hit chance, the higher the hit chance, the better.
There are multiple pieces of unholy gear from crafting skills, archaeology, and combat. The most powerful ones are listed below.

* Ring of Malice (m), Grudge Amulet (m), Consuming Shield (m) from the Unholy Forest dungeon.
Because the combat mechanics in this expansion are rather complex, and minor changes in enemy, equipment and player stats can make specific items better or worse it is always recommended to use the Combat Simulator to verify how to get the most kills per hour or drops per hour.
* Eradicating Gloves (m) from the Underwater City dungeon.

Other unholy item options include:
Other Combat Changes
* Unholy Gem (m) from Archeology
* The Unholy Ring (m) or Cursed Ring (m).

Unholy Prayer Equipment Recommendations
gem Gem Slot
<div class="warningbox">This section is heavily WIP due to the number of different factors that can go into using Unholy Prayers, as well as the possibility of nerfs.</div>

Unholy prayers do not help against Barrier enemies as they do not affect summoning damage.
A new gem gem equipment slot has been added which allows you to squeeze out higher summon max hit damage with gems like Devouring Barrier Gem or give various non Barrier modifiers such as the Agile Gem which reduces player attack interval.
Base Game
The gear listed below is the core required to see good results with unholy prayers.
Points of Interest
As always, use the Combat Simulator to test these setups for YOU to ensure you are hitting the required slayer area negation and damage reduction to not die. If attempting to manually eat through a dungeon while relying on weapons with special attacks that hit multiple times, remember that eating interrupts your attack and guarantees that your next attack will be a normal attack.
Another mechanic added is Points of Interest. Once mastered in Cartography, they can be travelled to to give the player both positive and negative modifiers.

The Eradicating Gloves (m) are a large upgrade to all styles, but require a larger investment into AOD combat.
Reccomended points of interest to use for combat are:

Magic
Ranged has bad options for multi-hit in the base game, so including additional unholy items such as Unholy Gem (m) or another unholy item in the passive slot may be a gain. Ring of barrage, and fast weapons such as throwing daggers may be a kph increase with increased levels of ammo/prayer points. Ghost Blunderbow and Engulfing Vortex Longbow are massive upgrades, but require a significantly larger investment into AOD combat. Consuming Shield (m) or another unholy item may be moved to the passive slot if needed.

Poison pods and Natures Bloom are small damage upgrades over cloudburst with a large amount of accuracy gained from crafted poison gear. This can enable manual kills of most ToTH dungeons as manual eating does not disable Archaic Magics as it does with regular spec attacks.

{| class="wikitable"
Having progressed through TotH combat will make  Atlas of Discovery combat significantly easier. This is due to the huge damage increase in the Spectre compared to Tortoise, the summon set from Necromancers Palace and the endgame weapons from Golden Cloud Mountains.

Note: From level 100-115 ranged does not get any good multi-hit items from ToTH. It may become more desirable to farm Ghost Blunderbow or possibly Engulfing Vortex Longbow at this point to greatly speed up ranged until higher levels.

Royal Toxins Spear can replace Infernal Claw + Ring of Blade Echoes. Melee can get away with the light DR of Consuming Shield (m) early on, but this not sufficient in Golden Cloud Mountains to farm Arctair as normal prayer DR is required. You may use Etherial Greataxe or Royal Toxin Spear with unholy prayers against Vorloran Watcher.

There are two main summoning synergies to use for Barrier focused combat:
* TotH Summoning Spectre for huge summoning max hit damage
* Summoning Tortoise if you haven't unlocked the above synergy

Melvor Base Game
Collect the first three god sets from: Air God Dungeon, Water God Dungeon and Earth God Dungeon. Collecting the fire god set from Fire God Dungeon will also be helpful but not strictly required. It is only for endgame clear speed improvement when you have enough damage reduction already.
TotH Throne of the Herald
Ensure you have the following armour from Necromancers Palace. This will be BIS save for a few items near the end of Atlas of Discovery:
* Hood of Shade Summon
* Amulet of Curse Totem Summon
* Gloves of Greater Shade Summon
* Ring of Phantom Summon
Collect the three weapons from Golden Cloud Mountains as these are the BIS for most Atlas of Discovery encounters:
* Agile Wings Rapier
* Feather Storm Crossbow
* Slicing Maelstrom Wand
Acquiring the Superior Max Skillcape will also be helpful.

* Max Hit potions can be a solid and reliable source of increased damage
* Damage Reduction Potion IV is incredibly useful for meeting DR requirements
* TotH Penetration Potion IV are potentially the highest amount of raw dps that can be gained from a potion and, once unlocked, can be used as the default combat potion for all Expansion Combat as soon as Ectoplasm is easily farmed
* TotH Critical Strike Potion IV are about equal to Penetration Potions in most situations, but require a material that is easier to obtain without doing difficult combat

* Blood Chalice
* Power Crystals
* Relic Whetstone and Charged Relic Quiver are technically good but they take so much effort to get they are ultimately useless

Atlas of Discovery Combat
Early Game Atlas of Discovery
After collecting the first three god sets from: Air God Dungeon, Water God Dungeon and Earth God Dungeon the player will be well equipped to start combat. Immediate goals are to begin gathering Barrier damaging equipment. The first gear the player will get is actually from the Ancient Market in Archaeology. Remember Cartography and Archaeology are crucial to progressing AoD Atlas Of Discovery combat.
Major Goals
# Excavate Old Summoning Amulet and Ring of Summoning from Ritual Site
# Farm Barrier Gem from Ancient Market to create Tortoise (you only need one for gem gem slot if you have a lot of Spectre already)
# Lesser Summoning Amulet from Blind Ghost
# Craft Ring of Barrier Touch
# Sapping Barrier Gem and Barrier Sapping Gloves from Vampiric Bat
# Excavate Ancient Silk from Bazaar to craft Ancient Infernal Cape
# Optionally; Max all skills for the Max Skillcape
# Excavate Ancient Stone Tablet from Monuments
# Farm 11 Draining Barrier Gem from Golem Territory to upgrade your gloves to Barrier Draining Gloves and to equip one in your gem gem slot
Mid Game Atlas of Discovery
After completing the early game the next goal is to unlock the Cult Grounds dungeon as fast as possible and farm it to upgrade your god gear to (B). The difficulty starts ramping up here. If you are struggling to defeat these dungeons check the individual strategy guides on each dungeons page.
Major Goals
# Find Old Route Chart
# Complete Unholy Forest once
# Find Torn Scrolls
# Complete Trickery Temple once
# Find Lost Cursed Text
# Adaptive Summoning Amulet from Cult Imp
# Farm Cult Grounds until you have enough Barrier Exalted Shard and Siphoning Barrier Gem to upgrade your air god and then earth god armour to (B). The helmet for both should be skipped if you have the summon set from TotH. Barrier Dust can be farmed from either Cult Imp or Cult Member
# Equip Summoner's Blessed Ring from Cult Grounds unless you are using the summon set from TotH
Late Game Atlas of Discovery
The main goal of late game is to find Melantis, collect the three weapons from Underwater Ruins, finishing Underwater City and then acquiring endgame clear speed items for the subsequent pet farms.
Major Goals
# Optionally; Finish Into the Mist at least once for the passive passive slot
# Discover Melantis through following a trail of clues (solution here for lazy people)
# Engulfing Vortex Longbow from Mermaid Archer. Devouring Barrier Gem in your gem gem slot. Optionally; Water Pulse Staff from Merman and Hasty Trident from Merman Guard can be acquired but they are easily replaced
# Underwater City (guide higly reccomended!). Equip Eradicating Gloves (m) as soon as they are found (for those using summon set play around with the Combat Simulator to decide whether to use them or not)
# Devouring Barrier Shield for shield shield slot and Knight's Summoning Defender for passive passive slot are both reccomended for further farming

Introduction

The following guide takes the player through the combat of the Atlas of Discovery Expansion with as little effort as possible. This guide is targeted at people who have either completed or nearly completed the base game. Completion of at least the Air God Dungeon is recommended to follow the largest portion of this guide.

A lot of the combat for Atlas Of Discovery is locked behind both the

skills so progress those if you have locked combat areas/dungeons.

This Guide is NOT designed with the Ancient Relics Game Mode in mind. Players looking for more information about that Game Mode should visit the Ancient Relics Guide. There is also the Barrier Guide which can be used as an alternative to this guide.

How Atlas of Discovery affects Base Game Combat

Barrier Combat

The primary mechanic added to the game in is Barrier, a powerful shield that is entirely immune to player attacks while active. In order to break barriers, the player must utilize

Summoning

Familiars that deal damage such as the

Error creating thumbnail: File missing

or

Unicorn

. Clear speed will be almost entirely determined by how fast you can break the Barrier so make sure to prioritize summon max hit in your builds.

Higher hit chance weapons are strongly recommended during the entire combat section, unless the alternative is required for Damage Reduction or the alternative simply does more damage. This is because the familiar's hit-chance is based on the player's hit chance, the higher the hit chance, the better.

Because the combat mechanics in this expansion are rather complex, and minor changes in enemy, equipment and player stats can make specific items better or worse it is always recommended to use the Combat Simulator to verify how to get the most kills per hour or drops per hour.
