Whenever the player gains Mastery XP, 25% of the amount received is also added to the Mastery Pool for that skill. Mastery Pool XP has two uses:
First, it can be spent to level up the mastery level of any item in the skill. Mastery Pool XP spent this way is converted to Mastery XP at a 1:1 rate.
Second, Checkpoints are reached when the Mastery Pool reaches 10%, 25%, 50%, and 95% filled. These bonuses vary by skill, but are often quite powerful. Checkpoints only remain active as long as the Mastery Pool has enough XP in it to meet the requirement - If enough Mastery Pool XP is spent on leveling items to dip below the threshold for a given checkpoint, the bonus will be lost until enough XP is gained to reach it again.

The cap of the mastery pool can be increased with {{ItemIcon|Cape of Completion}}, {{TotH}}{{PetIcon|Harold}}, and {{ItA}}{{PetIcon|Zon}}, which increase the pool cap by 25% (while equipped), 50%, and 25% respectively. These increase the maximum Mastery Pool XP, but not the XP needed to reach each checkpoint. Therefore, increasing the pool cap makes it easier to maintain the 95% checkpoint bonus without risking the mastery pool completely filling while training a skill.

Mastery is a secondary system of levels tied to individual items within a skill. Each item in a non-combat skill (with the exception of
spells) has a
level associated with it. Each recipe within a skill gains bonuses based on its Mastery level that depend on the specific skill the Mastery is associated with. To see a full list of bonuses for a given skill, check the in-game Mastery section of the completion log, the in-game bottom-right mini-bar
window, or visit the Wiki page for that skill.
Additionally, the player's total mastery level, also found in the in-game completion log, is used to calculate the drop chance of the Crown of Rhaelyx.
Earning Mastery XP
Each time a player completes an action with an associated Mastery Level, they will receive Mastery XP for that item. The XP per action calculation is:
[math]\displaystyle{ \Biggl \lfloor \biggl[ \Bigl( \text{Unlocked Actions} \times \frac{\text{Player Total Mastery for Skill}}{\text{Total Mastery for Skill}} \Bigr) + \Bigl( \text{Item Mastery Level} \times \frac{\text{Total Items in Skill}}{10} \Bigr) \biggr] \times \text{Action Time} \times 0.5 \times \left ( 1 + \text{Bonus} \right ) \Biggr \rfloor }[/math]
Where:
- Unlocked Actions is the number of actions the player has unlocked for the relevant skill. The mastery actions for a skill can be seen in game by either clicking the "Spend Mastery Pool XP" button on the skill's page, or by clicking "Progress" for the skill within the mastery section of the completion log - note however that this does display all mastery actions, not just those that the player has met the skill level requirement for.
- Player Total Mastery for Skill and Total Mastery for Skill are both numbers shown on each skill tile within the mastery section of the completion log
- Item Mastery Level is the mastery level of the item/action currently being crafted/performed
- Total Items in Skill is the number of items/actions within the relevant skill, and can also be expressed as [math]\displaystyle{ \tfrac{\text{Total Mastery for Skill}}{99} }[/math]
- Action Time varies depending on the skill:
- For Error creating thumbnail: File missingFarming, this is the amount of time (in hours) it took the crop to grow
- For gathering skills (Error creating thumbnail: File missingWoodcutting,Error creating thumbnail: File missingMining,Error creating thumbnail: File missingAgility,Error creating thumbnail: File missingThieving,Error creating thumbnail: File missingFishing andError creating thumbnail: File missingAstrology), this is the number of seconds taken to complete the action. As a result, for these skills the Mastery XP gained per second remains the same even when the action time is decreased, however it is still worth reducing the action time to increase the amount of resources gained over time
- For artisan skills (which consume resources to produce items), the action time is a fixed value regardless of the actual time it takes the player to complete an action. Therefore for these skills, reducing the action time increases the Mastery XP gained per second:

- Bonus is the percentage increase to experience gained. All available bonuses are detailed within the Bonuses section below
Also note the following
specific details:
- To arrive at the mastery XP granted by harvesting a plot, the result of the above formula requires a couple of adjustments: First the result should be multiplied by the quantity harvested, and then divided by an adjustment factor (3 for allotment & herb patches, 10 for trees)
- Each plot harvested counts as its own action, therefore in the case where the player harvests multiple plots simultaneously using the "Harvest All" button the mastery XP gained from each plot is calculated individually, taking into account mastery level increases between each plot harvested
In other words, there are two main factors that are added together to determine the XP per action:
- The first is based on how many total Mastery levels the player has in the skill. Each item in a skill adds up to +1 to this factor depending on its current Mastery level.
- The second is based on the Mastery level of the specific item gaining XP multiplied by one tenth of the total number of items in the skill.
After both of these factors are added together, they are multiplied by half of the time per action as measured in seconds.
There are three important takeaways from this:
- Mastery XP per action increases substantially as Mastery level in an item increases.
- Mastery XP is gained much more quickly for skills with a lot of items (such as Error creating thumbnail: File missingSmithing) than it is for skills with only a few (such asError creating thumbnail: File missingWoodcutting).
- Decreasing the action time is always beneficial: For artisan skills doing so can significantly increase the rate of Mastery XP gained, while for gathering skills this increases the rate of resources gained.

The Mastery Pool
Whenever the player gains Mastery XP, 25% of the amount received is also added to the Mastery Pool for that skill. After Skill level 99, the "Skill Mastery" perk increases this to 50% of the item's Mastery XP. The maximum Mastery Pool XP cap for a given skill is equal to 500,000 multiplied by the total number of items in that skill. Any Mastery Pool XP earned beyond the cap is lost forever. Owning expansions that add items to a skill or will increase the maximum cap of the Mastery Pool by the amount of items added.
Mastery tokens can be claimed from either the bank or the Spend Mastery XP interface, doing so fills the Mastery Pool for the relevant skill by 0.1% of the maximum amount that can be stored.
The cap of the mastery pool can be increased with Cape of Completion, Harold, and
, which increase the pool cap by 25% (while equipped), 50%, and 25% respectively. These increase the maximum Mastery Pool XP, but not the XP needed to reach each checkpoint. Therefore, increasing the pool cap makes it easier to maintain the 95% checkpoint bonus without risking the mastery pool completely filling while training a skill.
Mastery Level XP
Mastery Experience and levels use the same experience formulas and caps as normal Skill experience. Which is to say, going from one Mastery level to the next is always the same amount of experience as going from the same Skill level to the next. The experience difference between level [math]\displaystyle{ L-1 }[/math] and level [math]\displaystyle{ L }[/math] is approximately [math]\displaystyle{ \left\lfloor \frac{1}{4} \left( L-1+300\times 2^{\frac{L-1}{7}} \right) \right\rfloor }[/math]. The table below shows this experience difference for each level and also the cumulative experience from level 1 to level [math]\displaystyle{ L }[/math]. Note that experience levels are nonlinear and so the amount of experience between 1 and 92 is the same as the amount of experience between 92 and 99. Experience also doubles about every 7 levels. For example, the experience between 7 and 8 is 138 and the experience between 14 and 15 is 274, which is roughly double.
Skill Exp Table
The base game has a maximum skill and
level of 99, with the Throne of the Herald Expansion the skill level maximum is increased to 120.
