Introduction
This guide is designed to describe how best to integrate unholy prayers into combat progression with the AOD expansion. This is likely going to be very bare-bones primarily because balance changes are expected. A basic understanding of standard combat progression is expected using other various wiki guides.
The following guide takes the player through the combat of the AoD Atlas of Discovery Expansion with as little effort as possible. This guide is targeted at people who have either completed or nearly completed the base game. Completion of at least the Air God Dungeon is recommended to follow the largest portion of this guide.

A lot of the combat for AoD Atlas Of Discovery is locked behind both the Cartography and Archaeology skills so progress those if you have locked combat areas/dungeons.

This Guide is NOT designed with the Ancient Relics Game Mode in mind. Players looking for more information about that Game Mode should visit the Ancient Relics Guide. There is also the Barrier Guide which can be used as an alternative to this guide.

How Atlas of Discovery affects Base Game Combat
Barrier Combat
The primary mechanic added to the game in Atlas of Discovery is Barrier, a powerful shield that is entirely immune to player attacks while active. In order to break barriers, the player must utilize Summoning Familiars that deal damage such as the Golbin Thief or Unicorn. Clear speed will be almost entirely determined by how fast you can break the Barrier so make sure to prioritize summon max hit in your builds.

Higher hit chance weapons are strongly recommended during the entire combat section, unless the alternative is required for Damage Reduction or the alternative simply does more damage. This is because the familiar's hit-chance is based on the player's hit chance, the higher the hit chance, the better.

Because the combat mechanics in this expansion are rather complex, and minor changes in enemy, equipment and player stats can make specific items better or worse it is always recommended to use the Combat Simulator to verify how to get the most kills per hour or drops per hour.

Other Combat Changes
gem Gem Slot
A new gem gem equipment slot has been added which allows you to squeeze out higher summon max hit damage with gems like Devouring Barrier Gem or give various non Barrier modifiers such as the Agile Gem which reduces player attack interval.

Points of Interest
Another mechanic added is Points of Interest. Once mastered in Cartography, they can be travelled to to give the player both positive and negative modifiers.

Reccomended points of interest to use for combat are:

* Unhallowed Wasteland for respawn timer reduction
* Dark Waters for melee
* Bandit Hideout for ranged
* The Academia Arcanum for magic

These can also be simulated in the Combat Simulator to avoid the expensive travel costs.

Unholy Prayers
Unfortunately Unholy Prayers were nerfed so don't worry about those.

Stats and Buffs
Having progressed through TotH combat will make  Atlas of Discovery combat significantly easier. This is due to the huge damage increase in the Spectre compared to Tortoise, the summon set from Necromancers Palace and the endgame weapons from Golden Cloud Mountains.

Summoning
There are two main summoning synergies to use for Barrier focused combat:
* TotH Summoning Spectre for huge summoning max hit damage
* Summoning Tortoise if you haven't unlocked the above synergy

Gear
Melvor Base Game
Collect the first three god sets from: Air God Dungeon, Water God Dungeon and Earth God Dungeon. Collecting the fire god set from Fire God Dungeon will also be helpful but not strictly required. It is only for endgame clear speed improvement when you have enough damage reduction already.

TotH Throne of the Herald
Ensure you have the following armour from Necromancers Palace. This will be BIS save for a few items near the end of Atlas of Discovery:
* Hood of Shade Summon
* Amulet of Curse Totem Summon
* Gloves of Greater Shade Summon
* Ring of Phantom Summon

Collect the three weapons from Golden Cloud Mountains as these are the BIS for most Atlas of Discovery encounters:
* Agile Wings Rapier
* Feather Storm Crossbow
* Slicing Maelstrom Wand

Acquiring the Superior Max Skillcape will also be helpful.

Herblore
* Diamond Luck Potion IV is BIS if you haven't built TotH Waterfall Crossing yet
* Max Hit potions can be a solid and reliable source of increased damage
* Damage Reduction Potion IV is incredibly useful for meeting DR requirements
* TotH Penetration Potion IV are potentially the highest amount of raw dps that can be gained from a potion and, once unlocked, can be used as the default combat potion for all Expansion Combat as soon as Ectoplasm is easily farmed
* TotH Critical Strike Potion IV are about equal to Penetration Potions in most situations, but require a material that is easier to obtain without doing difficult combat

Prayers
* TotH Battleborn is goated so pretty much always use this
* Battleheart
* TotH Valor/Avidity/Divination
* Piety/Rigour/Augury
* TotH Holy Aegis
* Stone Skin

Consumables
* Fervor Scroll
* Monster Hunter Scroll
* Summoner's Blessing is good but requires a lot of effort to get so use sparingly
* Blood Chalice
* Power Crystals
* Relic Whetstone and Charged Relic Quiver are technically good but they take so much effort to get they are ultimately useless

Make sure to run in Combat Simulator to find out what to use! These are just recommendations.

How do Unholy Prayers fit into combat progression?
Atlas of Discovery Combat
Unholy prayers give a massive boost to late base-game combat. They can increase kills per hour (kph) by a magnitude of 1.5x-4/5x in dark waters and beyond. This can dramatically shorten grinds such as 5000 of each dark waters mob and trivialize difficult bosses.

While they can be acquired earlier than Into the Mist (ITM), they are far less effective without the passive slot. One of their main strengths is multiple forms of % max HP damage, which is most effective on the strong enemies such as in Dark Waters, Unhallowed Wasteland, Impending Darkness, and ToTH combat.
Early Game Atlas of Discovery
Note: The bosses of Into the Mist are immune to all debuffs including unholy marks, so unholy prayers are not effective.
After collecting the first three god sets from: Air God Dungeon, Water God Dungeon and Earth God Dungeon the player will be well equipped to start combat. Immediate goals are to begin gathering Barrier damaging equipment. The first gear the player will get is actually from the Ancient Market in Archaeology. Remember Cartography and Archaeology are crucial to progressing AoD Atlas Of Discovery combat.

Unholy Prayer Mechanics
Major Goals
Unholy prayers do not follow the same mechanics as normal prayers.
# Excavate Old Summoning Amulet and Ring of Summoning from Ritual Site
* Unholy prayers consume prayer points on each HIT, not once per attack turn.
# Farm Barrier Gem from Ancient Market to create Tortoise (you only need one for gem gem slot if you have a lot of Spectre already)
* For each unholy ITEM equipped, 1 unholy mark is applied on HIT to the enemy, up to a maximum of 5.
# Lesser Summoning Amulet from Blind Ghost
* Each time prayer points are CONSUMED for an unholy prayer, 1 unholy mark is removed from the enemy. This happens independently for each prayer, so for 2 prayers, 2 stacks are removed. This means prayer preservation results in fewer marks being consumed. Enemy attacks also remove 1 stack per attack turn.
# Craft Ring of Barrier Touch
* Unholy prayers scale in power based on unholy marks on the enemy.
# Sapping Barrier Gem and Barrier Sapping Gloves from Vampiric Bat
# Excavate Ancient Silk from Bazaar to craft Ancient Infernal Cape
# Optionally; Max all skills for the Max Skillcape
# Excavate Ancient Stone Tablet from Monuments
# Farm 11 Draining Barrier Gem from Golem Territory to upgrade your gloves to Barrier Draining Gloves and to equip one in your gem gem slot

It is also necessary to specifically talk about RECKONING. The effect is extremely unclear "+10% damage dealt per effect affected by". The way this works is:
Mid Game Atlas of Discovery
* For each buff on you (meaning, individual icon), you gain 10% damage per unholy mark on the enemy.
* Buffs with stacks only count as 1 buff, but debuffs such as stun, poison, stun recovery, ect all count.
* Buffs that begin with 0 stacks such as Agile Gem and Leviathan Shield still count as a buff while on 0 stacks.
* So for example if you had 5 buffs, with 5 marks on the enemy, you are dealing 250% increased damage.

Due to the mechanics listed above, there are some cases where only a single prayer provides more damage than 2.
After completing the early game the next goal is to unlock the Cult Grounds dungeon as fast as possible and farm it to upgrade your god gear to (B). The difficulty starts ramping up here. If you are struggling to defeat these dungeons check the individual strategy guides on each dungeons page.
* With only the minimum 2 items equipped and little/no prayer point preservation, using 2 prayers results in little/no marks being applied meaning prayers have no effect.
* Without multi-hitting weapons, a slow attack speed weapon may struggle to stack sufficient marks on the enemy due to them being removed on enemy attacks.
* Thus, it is recommended to use multi-hitting weapons with 3+ unholy items for the best results.

Unholy Prayer Setups for Base Game Combat
Major Goals
# Find Old Route Chart
# Complete Unholy Forest once
# Find Torn Scrolls
# Complete Trickery Temple once
# Find Lost Cursed Text
# Adaptive Summoning Amulet from Cult Imp
# Farm Cult Grounds until you have enough Barrier Exalted Shard and Siphoning Barrier Gem to upgrade your air god and then earth god armour to (B). The helmet for both should be skipped if you have the summon set from TotH. Barrier Dust can be farmed from either Cult Imp or Cult Member
# Equip Summoner's Blessed Ring from Cult Grounds unless you are using the summon set from TotH

All setups use reckoning+destruction prayers. These setups are suitable for Dark Waters, Unhallowed Wasteland, and Impending Darkness. Make extensive use of combat sim to test your setups to ensure you are hitting the required slayer area negation and damage reduction to not die. When manual-eating, the special attacks do not trigger causing a massive DPS loss. Eradication Gloves are a massive upgrade but require a significantly larger investment into AOD combat.
Late Game Atlas of Discovery
Note: Using water strike over higher level water spells can be a minimal kph loss with a massive reduction in runes used.
The main goal of late game is to find Melantis, collect the three weapons from Underwater Ruins, finishing Underwater City and then acquiring endgame clear speed items for the subsequent pet farms.

Note: Ranged has bad options for multi-hit in the base game, this is also why unholy gem is listed as an additional item for more marks helps. The passive slot can use an additional unholy item as well. Ring of barrage, and fast weapons such as throwing daggers may be a kph increase with increased levels of ammo/prayer points. Introduction

The following guide takes the player through the combat of the Atlas of Discovery Expansion with as little effort as possible. This guide is targeted at people who have either completed or nearly completed the base game. Completion of at least the Air God Dungeon is recommended to follow the largest portion of this guide.

A lot of the combat for Atlas Of Discovery is locked behind both the

and

Archaeology

skills so progress those if you have locked combat areas/dungeons.

This Guide is NOT designed with the Ancient Relics Game Mode in mind. Players looking for more information about that Game Mode should visit the Ancient Relics Guide. There is also the Barrier Guide which can be used as an alternative to this guide.

A simplistic order for completing Combat:

How Atlas of Discovery affects Base Game Combat

Barrier Combat

The primary mechanic added to the game in is Barrier, a powerful shield that is entirely immune to player attacks while active. In order to break barriers, the player must utilize

Familiars that deal damage such as the

or

Unicorn

Air God Dungeon

,

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Water God Dungeon

and

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Earth God Dungeon

the player will be well equipped to start combat. Immediate goals are to begin gathering Barrier damaging equipment. The first gear the player will get is actually from the Ancient Market in

Archaeology

. Remember

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Cartography

and

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Archaeology

are crucial to progressing Atlas Of Discovery combat.

Major Goals

  1. Excavate Old Summoning Amulet and Ring of Summoning from Ritual Site
  2. Farm Barrier Gem from Ancient Market to create Tortoise (you only need one for gem slot if you have a lot of Spectre SynergyIcon.png Spider already)
  3. Lesser Summoning Amulet from Blind Ghost
  4. Craft Ring of Barrier Touch
  5. Sapping Barrier Gem and Barrier Sapping Gloves from Vampiric Bat
  6. Excavate Ancient Silk from Bazaar to craft Ancient Infernal Cape
  7. Optionally; Max all skills for the Max Skillcape
  8. Excavate Ancient Stone Tablet from Monuments
  9. Farm 11 Draining Barrier Gem from Golem Territory to upgrade your gloves to Barrier Draining Gloves and to equip one in your gem slot

Mid Game Atlas of Discovery

After completing the early game the next goal is to unlock the Cult Grounds dungeon as fast as possible and farm it to upgrade your god gear to (B). The difficulty starts ramping up here. If you are struggling to defeat these dungeons check the individual strategy guides on each dungeons page.

Major Goals

  1. Find Old Route Chart
  2. Complete

    Cult Imp
  7. Farm Cult Grounds until you have enough Barrier Exalted Shard and Siphoning Barrier Gem to upgrade your air god and then earth god armour to (B). The helmet for both should be skipped if you have the summon set from . Barrier Dust can be farmed from either
    Error creating thumbnail: File missing
    Cult Imp
    or
    Error creating thumbnail: File missing
    Cult Member
  8. Equip Summoner's Blessed Ring from Cult Grounds unless you are using the summon set from

Late Game Atlas of Discovery

The main goal of late game is to find Melantis, collect the three weapons from Underwater Ruins, finishing Underwater City and then acquiring endgame clear speed items for the subsequent Lumi pet farms.

Major Goals

  1. Optionally; Finish
