Most players start combat with Attack as it does not require the overhead of Fletching Ammunition for Ranged or Runecrafting Runes for Magic.

* Melee Armour can be upgraded () twice from the Bank by using the Upgrade button, once with Silver Bar and the second time with Gold Bar.
** The first Upgrade provides some boosts to the Strength and Melee Defence bonuses on the Item.
** The second Upgrade provides Damage Reduction as well as some further increases to the Strength and Melee Defence bonuses on the Item. (There is no Damage Reduction for (G) Bronze Helmet or (G) Iron Helmet).
*** Damage Reduction is very important. It allows you to take less damage per hit taken. Allowing you to fight stronger enemies and use less food in the process.
** Typically, upgrading armor isn't really worth the extra time spent until at least Mithril Helmet. <br>

Obtaining Melee Gear has 2 options:
* Smithing has all Gear Sets up to Level 60 Combat Levels. This also requires Mining to be leveled.
** Requires up to Smithing Level 99 and Mining Level 95.
** This includes the Dragon Helmet Tier which is not easily obtainable from Combat but can be skipped.
* From Combat.
** Requires up to Smithing Level 40 and Mining Level 40.
*** Silver Bar and Gold Bar can also be obtained from Combat from Statue but this is discouraged as the drop rate is rather low.
** Castle of Kings has Steel Knight, Mithril Knight, Adamant Knight and Rune Knight which all drop their respective Armour Sets and Weapons.
*** The Black Knight is generally skipped due to the low drop rate on its items as well as the Armour Tier being easily skipped.
** It is generally advised to fight these Knights with Magic due to Combat Triangle benefits.

Melee leveling is split across 3 different skills, Attack, Strength, and Defence.
* Attack is trained using the Attack Attack Style
* Strength is trained using the Strength Attack Style
* Defence is trained using the Defence Attack Style

In general, all Melee weapons have Stat distributions that encourage the use of the following Attack Styles:

Important Notes on This Guide, Please Read
* Levels for Defence, Strength, Slayer and Prayer are assumed to be equal to the Attack Level unless mentioned otherwise.
* This Guide does not include any Potions, Pets. Agility or Astrology unless specifically mentioned in the section.
* Each section is to the next Gear Set and/or Spell, sections can be skipped. In this case ETA until the next section will need to be re-calculated.
** The Experience Table can be used to reference how much XP is needed.
* Items with (Optional) next to them are recommended, but not required for survival. If not owned these items can be skipped, they will however impact the XP /h gained.
** Items with the (Optional) tag next to them are still recommended to be obtained.
* Gems and Points of Interest are recommended if AoD is owned, they are not required.
* Rough estimates for Food consumed /h are listed in Lemonade which heals for 1 Hitpoints. Simply divide the Food Consumed /h numbers by how much the used Food heals for.
* Each section assumes at least Auto Eat - Tier I has been unlocked.
* Up to Level 60 in all 3 Attack Styles Any Dagger used in the Leveling sections can be replaced by a Scimitar for roughly the same XP /h in Strength.
** Defence is recommended to be leveled with Magic on Defensive but can also be leveled with a Dagger for slightly lower XP /h rates than listed below.

* At this stage it is recommended you farm out an Obsidian Cape from Adamant Knight if one has not been obtained yet. With Melee his requires:
** Hitpoints Level 44 at Auto Eat - Tier I
** Hitpoints Level 29 at Auto Eat - Tier II
* With Auto Eat - Tier II, Hitpoints Level 28 or higher and Slayer Level 50 you can fight Turkul Riders which drop Sand Treaders which are not used in this guide but provide a 0.1 Second Attack Interval Bonus (for all styles). Consult the Combat Simulator to see if they can be used.
* Rune Claw is a much better weapon and can be used for all 3 Attack Styles. It is also better than Dragon Sword used in the next section. It is however only obtainable from Golem Territory which is a Barrier Dungeon and requires AoD.
* With Auto Eat - Tier III and Hitpoints Level 34,  Easy Slayer Tasks can be idled safely.
* With Auto Eat - Tier III and Hitpoints Level 38,  Normal Slayer Tasks can be idled safely.
* With Auto Eat - Tier III and Hitpoints Level 50,  Hard Slayer Tasks can be idled safely.

* Dragon Sword can be obtained from Pirate Booty which drops from clearing the Deep Sea Ship Dungeon.
** The main objective from the Deep Sea Ship Dungeon Rewards would be Sunset Rapier used in the next section. It is advised to stop farming this Dungeon if this is obtained and continue to the next section with Rune Dagger

** Griffin is best fought with Magic, preferably using Ancient Magick.
* At Hitpoints Level 52 with Auto Eat - Tier III you can safely idle Sand Beast for Sandstorm Ring which is recommended but not required. Use this item instead of Silver Topaz Ring.
