Ancient Relics
Dungeons
While dungeons are unchanged, the Ancient Relics gamemode requires players to complete dungeons to increase their skill levels, which are otherwise locked to a very low level.
While dungeons can be completed in any order, the following is a suggested order based on the max hit of the boss of each dungeon, including a link to the guide to that dungeon, as well as the combat level cap the player will have for that dungeon.

Skills
At the start, your skills level will be limited to 10, which means that you will only have access to low level equipment at the start. However, over time, you will start to build up relics which will increase your level. Fishing and cooking will be locked out altogether meaning that dungeons are considerably harder.
Any XP you earn that pushes you over the ceiling cap will be lost, resulting in wasted Skill XP. Your mastery, however will continue to increase beyond the skill level, which can help give bonuses you would otherwise not be able to achieve.
This cap of XP especially important to consider with skills such as
because there is only a finite amount of XP available for surveying, and if you start exploring too early it may be considerably harder to progress this skill later on. You should therefore avoid auto-survey until you are at least able to reach skill level 100 (ideally higher). And if you do explore (which is recommended) that you take note of ceiling cap so that you do not waste too much precious XP. Paper making and map upgrades do have unlimited XP but are a much slower way to gain XP in this skill.
Starting tips (Level 1 to 10)
At the start of Ancient Relics you will have no weapons, or even a tutorial with useful gear, and a very low limit on what you can do in combat or skilling. This is a rough start, and so every small boost and item will make a big difference in the early stages.
Your first goal should be to complete the
, but despite this being the easiest dungeon, it is not advisable to rush into taking on this challenge without preparing adequately.
Some helpful things to get you started:
- Township Tasks: Check out the easier Error creating thumbnail: File missingTownship tasks as often these will give useful rewards such as food, or which can be a big boost early on.
- Cartography: Survey the POI close to your starting position in Error creating thumbnail: File missingCartography to obtain 50 and 2000. However, do not waste any XP while exploring or else you will make it very hard for yourself later on.
- Bronze Dagger: Use a Bronze Dagger to kill 100 Plant. This will complete the township task and reward you with 2,000 Potatoes. Try to avoid eating your Shrimp as these are best used in the early dungeons.
- Runecrafting: Magic is relatively powerful when starting out in this game mode, and Error creating thumbnail: File missingRunecrafting will let you unlock more damaging spells. Mine plenty of Rune Essence to create runes and obtains staves such as the Staff of Earth which give a high damage at relative low levels. Train up toError creating thumbnail: File missingLevel 10 on Cow.
It is recommended that stick to Plant, Chicken and Cow until you have completed the
dungeon. When you complete the dungeon, you will level up your combat and your skills.
Skilling recommendations (Levels 11 to 29)
Once you start completing the early dungeons, your skills will level up. You will be offered a randomized selection of skills and levels to choose from in the from and each time the ceiling caps are lifted it will unlock more items. It is up to you which options you choose, and whilst some might be obvious, it can be daunting weighing up the benefits of each skill as it can be a while before you are able to complete the next dungeon.
In choosing which skills to focus, these skills have some useful benefits:
- Slayer: The File:Slayer Tasks (item).png Slayer Tasks will reward which can be used to purchase Error creating thumbnail: File missingSlayer re-supplies. These give you a good source of food, prayer and ammo. It is going to be a long time before you unlockError creating thumbnail: File missingFishing andError creating thumbnail: File missingCooking, so these re-supplied will be invaluable. LevellingError creating thumbnail: File missingSlayer will also unlock new mobs and dungeons in time.
- Thieving: Once you get to File:Theiving (skill).png Level 25 you will unlock File:Assistant Cook (monster).png Assistant Cook which will be a great source of food. Also, you can use File:Theiving (skill).png Theiving to get as well as other useful drops.
- Farming: This provides a passive source of food, herbs, and logs. Kill Junior Farmer until you have 3 seeds of the same type to start out on Error creating thumbnail: File missingFarming and then use to unlock more slots. In time, the passive benefits ofError creating thumbnail: File missingFarming will give you a huge boost.
- Astrology: Early on, there are some good passive boosts available in Error creating thumbnail: File missingAstrology. The unlocks double each time, so early on focus it is best to unlock the cheaper boosts, rather than trying to max out each item.
- Summoning: This gives a big boost and is needed for the higher strength mobs and dungeons. For example, Template:Summon is a good early summon that will help give the advantage in combat.
This game mode is all about experimenting and trying things out new things. So play with your skills and see what other items you can unlock before going after the tougher dungeons.
When levelling up your skills consider how best to balance the level caps.
For example, if you level File:Smelting (skill).png Smelting it will give you access to stronger weapons and armour, but to use this skill you will also not
for the raw materials and a higher combat level to wear the items you have made. Similarly, if you level
to soon then you will also need
(or File:Theiving (skill).png Theiving) to balance out this skill.
Once you are able to take any skill to 20, you are guaranteed to receive your first Ancient Relic. The relic will be selected at random, and may benefit the skill itself or help with other skills. These rewards may help direct your play-style, and could even influence how you appraoch the dungeons or other skills.
In these early levels, this game mode is all about striking a balance between your skill caps and your combat levels, and finding Ancient Relics will help you greatly on your journey to the next levels.
Skilling recommendations (Levels 30+)
By now, you should be getting the hang of this game mode style, and you may even have identified a winning strategy. There is not much more to teach but plenty to discover along the way.
What to do next:
- Archeology: Discovering rare artifacts in File:Archeology (skill).png Archeology will unlock new Dungeons. For example, if you discover the dig site Monuments and then excavate, you can unlock Template:Zone, which will give access to other Dungeons.
- Cartography: Exploring more of the map will give you boosts and dig sites that unlock many unique items. For example the Wet Forest at (9, 16) will reward 60 Oxilyme Seeds, 60 Mantalyme Seeds and 60 Lemontyle Seeds which can help you get started in Error creating thumbnail: File missingFarming and File:Herbology (skill).png Herbology. And Holy Isles at (17, 17) will reward 100 Medium Urn which can be buried to give you a largeError creating thumbnail: File missingPrayer boost.
- Runed Battlefield: This provides 1,000 Mind Rune, 1,000 Chaos Rune and 1,000 Death Rune which will give added boosts for the early bosses.
- Castle of Kings: Here you can find the File:Knights Cape (item).png Knights Cape and the File:(g) Mitril Platebody (item).png (g) Mitril Platebody which can help you take File:Mellee (skill).png Mellee to the next level.
- Mucky Cave: Discovering Mucky Cave at (22, 18) in Error creating thumbnail: File missingCartography unlocks the Mucky Cave which provides Barrier Dust, Barrier Sapping Gloves and consumables such as Leeching Bolts, Vial of Goo, and Vial of Acid.
When to fully explore cartography
It is not recommended that you fully explore
(or use Auto Survey) until you are at least
. In
if you survey beyond your level cap, then you will be wasting valuable XP and it is likely to limit how much of the map you will be bale explore. This loss of survey XP is hard to recover from.
If you do end up needing more XP, then the only option available is to create and upgrade maps which consumes a lot of Paper and is not a generous source of XP.
In summary, explore
manually unless you are fully levelled and try to avoid wasting too much XP. You have been warned!
Beginners Guide
The Ancient Relics game mode is all about discovery. There is no one way to play, and this is by no means intended to be seen as the right way, or indeed the fastest way to level up.
Starting out
Start by
. Chop down Normal Logs until you hit
, and when unlocked chop Oak Logs. Give the first 25 Bird Nest your get to township for 5,000 , and then open any Bird Nests and keep going until you have at least 3 of any seed (doesn't matter which) and when you have them plant them in farming. Anything you grow, you can eat, and food is going to be an ongoing challenge until fishing and cooking are unlocked. Burn the Normal Logs until you hit
, and then burn all of your Oak Logs. You will you get some Ash from that can be buried to give you prayer points. At
start burning Oak Logs as these earn slightly more ash. Do not light bonfires as the XP will be lost. Mine File:Essense (item).png Essense until {{SkillReq|Mining|10} is reached, then use the runes
to gather File:(item).png [[]] Mine Tin Ore and Copper Ore in equal quantities until you hit the
limit. Sell any jewels you unearth, as these will give you some early and much needed . Next, smith Bronze Bar. As they become unlocked, smith 1 Bronze Sword, 1 Bronze Helmet, 1 Bronze Boots and 1 Bronze Gloves. This will be your basic armour set for tackling the Template:Chicken Coop! Using your bronze gear, fight the Template:Monster until you reach
,
and
. Eat Potatoes as needed to avoid death as even the plant will eventually kill you. You may discover File:Mark of the Golbin Theif (item).png Mark of the Golbin Theif, and if you do it's worth
one time just to unlock this skill. Do this whether the marks unlock, as these will be useful later on. Study
to unlock
and when you have enough Stardust, increase the Attack Accuracy Rating to +3%. There is no limit to how much stardust you can get, but it is not a good trade-off to collect too much Stardust as this stage, and the unlocks become disproportionately expensive. Starting
and
will help you out later on, so these are worth starting as soon as you can. Ideally with some plants growing, and a basic melee build, it's time to hit the Template:Dungeon.
Dungeon: Chicken Coop
Combat: Equip your best food and use your strongest magic spell to defeat the chicken coop, then the graveyard, and finally the spider1.
Using your 100 File:Shimp (item).png Shimp, it is time to battle the Template:Chicken Coop. The first 5 monsters should be straight forward with your levelled up bronze armour, but eat sparingly if required. For the Template:Monster you will have a low chance of hitting her, and she will do serious damage to you fairly often. It will be an epic battle, but you should find that you can eventually defeat her by grinding down the hitpoints and eating regularly.
Once Template:Monster is defeated, you will gain your first set of boosts. You will be presented with a choice on which items you level up. In general, try to level the skills evenly. The exceptions to this are
,
,
. These are few downsides if these are levelled. Useful skills to upgrade at this early stage are
so that you can unlock iron weapons,
so that you can complete your armour set, and
so that you can earn discovery bonuses. In addition, you will be given one food crate for your trouble. Depending on which skills you were offered and selected, it is time to consider your options. In your current state, you are much too weak to consider the next dungeon, so your best option now is to level up your newly found skills. In addition, township tasks are a good way to get some early funds, as you will want to open up some more farming slots, and purchase more buildings in
. If all else fails, then consider
as the golden stardust can be used to give some further strength bonused.
Dungeon: Undead Graveyard
Keep skilling all of the newly updated skills until you earn your first File:Ancient Relic (item).png Ancient Relic. You can View Ancient Relics to read more about the skill and it's rewards. Most of the skills will guarantee a relic when you get to Template:SkillReg, and so you should be able to get at least one File:Ancient Relic (item).png Ancient Relic for your troubles. You will note too that your combat level has raised by +5 XP which will be needed for the next dungeon.
You will be allocated a random permanent boost to the skill that you happen to be doing at the time, but every boost will give you a big advantage in that skill, even if it doesn't seem that way at first. Continue levelling up and collecting relics until you are able to unlock stronger weapons and armour (mellee) or some runes in magic. There is no point starting
you have unlocked more levels in both woodcutting and fletching as the bronze arrows are not great. Continue chopping wood, and making fire - although you will be losing valuable XP, the mastery perks of Template:Skilll will help all of the other skills. If you find any Lesser Relics in your wallet, then these are normally worth equipping to give you a further boost in the skill that you are working on.
Undead Graveyard
It is going to be an uphill struggle going from the relatively easy Chicken Coop, to the Undead Graveyard, especially now that the starting supply of Shrimp has been mostly used up already. And it's unlikely that you will have sufficient skill levelling, weapons or food to tackle this dungeon.
Armour/weapons: use skilling to try and increase your armour. This could be through theiving, smithingor even Cartography. Use your strengths to your advantage. But remember that you will only be able to equip armour and weapons that are skill level <=15. Purchase at least one Mark of the Golbin summon.
Food: continue to chop wood to collect seeds from bird nests. You can eat what you grow, and levelling up farming will give you benefits along the way. You will need
before you can start getting food from the Template:Monster, so this is not an option until a bit later in the game, but levelling up File:Theiving (skill).png theiving is recommended as it gives you money as well as items.
GP: thieving is probably the easiest way to make money at this stage, and you are free to sell any items that you don't need, but it is best to try and establish an income source early on.
